First of all I am pleased to be part of this community of C3 owners! I have recently purchased a two owner '68. Now on to the question:
I am trying to ascertain if the exterior window whisker/felt on a '68 actually had a rubber wiper. Corvette parts retailers will sell them, but I have not seen them indicated in any GM build sheets or parts lists. I see "seal assembly" listed, but illustrations show the beaded chrome strip and whiskers, no rubber.
Does anyone know if a rubber wiper was used on the exterior, and if so can you supply a picture...they are worth thousands of words. My many thanks, Bob

I believe the exterior used rubber seals, while the interior used the "whiskers" type. That being said, the '68, especially an early '68, may have had something else. I'm sure someone here will have a definitive answer, tho...

Whiskers; inner and outer. If memory serves, you can find the outers in repro. The inners are rare as hen's teeth.

Thanks for the info. 68 inner assemblies are available, repro, not cheap, but available.
The outer whiskers, or felts are available, as are outer rubber seals. I am just not sure if outer rubber seals were actually on the car when produced in 68. I have original GM corvette parts book which only lists the "Outer Assembly" (RH & LH) and the illustration sure doesn't look like any rubber wiper. I haven't taken apart the assembly on my door, but definitely there is not a gap between the whisker and the door trim for thereto have been a rubber wiper installed. If there had been, I am sure the whiskers would be rattling in the door, not tight like they are.
Again thanks for the previous comments, and I appreciate anyones further insight on early window seals.

Purchase the '68 assembly instruction manual (AIM). The AIM will show the correct installation and list the original part numbers. I've been meaning to check my AIM, but haven't gotten around to it. If memory serves, there is no rubber on the '68 installation.

My parts catalogue lists these as 3937265 and 66 for the inners and 3937267 abd 68 for the outers, but those numbers are from the 1983 edition of the parts catalogue.

Thanks Mike...I have the AIM manuel, as well, and I see no rubber wiper in the assembly for the door...so I am going without! I tried this morning to see if I could get the rubber to fit, but the fasteners on the backside of the whisker felts are too short for the rubber to be included in the assembly. I checked the whisker felt fasteners on the repros vs the originals and they are the same length. I saw no evidence of residual rubber in the window channel or in the bottom of the door frame...I believe this is another one of those one time '68 oddities.

AIM shows 3945289 and 90 for the outers which clip through the stainless steel trim into the door. 3937265 and 66 for the inners which mount to the door. I agree on the rubber: AIM does not show it.
69 up have a rubber "wiper" stapled to the interior door trim panel which rests against the door glasses, but I don't think the '68 panels have them.

The 68 inners are a separate unit from the door panel. The repros I bought are well made, but a few assembly mods to the original GM part. The originals were painted black, the repros were not, the originals were threaded 10-24, the repros are threaded 8-32, but come with new bolts and washers, the original whiskers/felts and rubber were riveted to the metal assembly body, the repros are screwed on with sheet metal screws. The sheet metal screws are not a good solution as they are too long and do not allow the assembly to be installed. I am now in the process of pulling the screws and riveting the assembly together as it should have been. Other than that the fit is great, no complaint on the actual materials used or the shape of the assembly, it is a very good match to the original. It just seems funny that the manufacturer couldn't have painted the bare metal, tapped the holes to original specs and riveted the assembly together....if they had, the inners would have been a perfect match!
