My 82 vette has been frying fuel pumps off and on for several years. I say off and on because it was doing it rather frequently a few years ago, then, after it was parked for a couple of years, I started driving it occasionally and it did not do it for about three years. It has begun to do it again. What could be the cause of this?

Are they being melted, or just stop working? If the connector at the pump itself is always brown/black from heat, the most common problem has been the connector on the sending unit, where the car harness connects to the sender/pump. If that connection gets corroded, it causes a lot of heat due to the amp draw, and then the fuel pump suffers.
