replacing the speakers is not a big job. lust lift off the grills. The grills have tabs on both the right and left side slide grill either way and lift out. speakers are under and are bolted from the top 4 screws. A right angle or short screw driver helps a lot not much room for a screw driver. remove connectors and replace with new speakers speakers are 4x6. 4x6 plate speakers work great.

Hey thanks for the info, I thought that they might come off that way, but have not really tried, I just saw an article the other day involving an older vette and he was having to take the whole freakin dash off and I was definatly dreading that.
So plate speakers work good huh, I was kinda wondering about that as well.
Thanks for the helpful advice...

Vette(s): 1981, Black/Black, Engine bumped to about 400HP.Ext/int mostly stock.
Not all 4x6 speakers will fit. Be very careful of the magnet size. I ordered from Crutchfield. Speakers were labeled as "EZ Fit" which was supposed to mean bolt-in. In fact, I had to do some cutting of the inner plastic of the dash plus GRIND OFF THE CORNER OF THE MAGNET. It turned a 30 minute task into a 4 hour job - I was not happy! My conclusion: don't mail order. Either go to a place where they can do the install or remove your old speakers before hand and go to the store, where you can compare actual speaker size and maybe even sit a speaker into place before buying.
