Hi-I actually modified the passenger seat differently than the driver seat. I think this method is better than the method I outlined above but takes a little more time. The new method is more "robust" than the other technique. Both techniques work really well and the seats are much more comfortable. The technique involves a spacer that conforms to the shape of part of the hinge and separates the top and bottom parts of the hinges where they contact each other. I actually used a very large picture hook that I had and bent it to conform to the shape of the hinge. The picture hook worked well because the metal was fairly pliable but also thick. I then fastened the spacer on each side to the upper part of the hinge with a small screw. Now when the seat back is upright the upper and lower parts of the hinge are separated by the space which chafes the angle of the seat back. A relatively thin peace of metal changes the angle of the upper part of the seat a fair amount. You can't see the spacer since it gets covered by the decorative plastic hinge cover. The attached photo hopefully will help. The trick is to patiently bend the metal with 2 pairs of needle nose pliers to get the metal to approximate the curve of the hinge.

I have the same problem on my '80. I split a length of thick-walled hose lengthwise and put it over the lip that the seat back touches. It is much better now and it can easily be removed.
