Iirc, AM/FM stereo would have two amps. Typically plug and play, assuming you have the correct radio head.

Did the stereo radio have 4 speakers 2 in dash and 2 in front lower kick panels?

No....there would be NO speakers in the kick panels from the factory at all. AM/FM stereo used the same speakers the mono radios used, the 2 in the upper dash pad. Does your car have the factory radio in it? If so, then it would have a small yellow(possibly red? not sure on your year car) light in the faceplate that comes on when a stereo station is tuned in IF it a stereo tuner. You would also be able to adjust the speakers left/right using the rear knob on the passenger side of the radio.

The two heat sinks are just the output stage of the stereo radio. Mono has only the right side. The heat sinks do get warm so dont worry about that. The radio had so little room behind it the engineers moved the output transistors to a seperate heat sink. The same radio in a metal car had the transistor heat sink on the back of the radio. The wiring should be all there for an original stereo radio. I see some are connected already - so what are you doing in there?

Interesting.
Don’t think I’ve ever heard of someone going back to original radio.
BTW, I went to the Carlisle Auto Mania show Saturday and a guy had the original stereo radio for my year on a table. I spotted that gem immediately from our conversation here.
unfortunately it was missing both outboard pieces. The multiplex assembly and the other heat sink. He said the other pieces are probably still  in the car. (?) Bummer - I would have snapped that up since mine is only the mono version 🙁

There are places you can send your old factory radio and they will completely modernize the guts including adding bluetooth or a usb port.  Does not change the appearance of the radio.
