Can anyone tell me the difference between a 1968 center cluster bezel and 1969 and why I can use or modify a 1969 bezel for my 1968? Thank you for any input.

I'm not sure of all the differences, but the '68 bezel has a smooth finish where the '69-'71 bezel has a textured or pebble finish. I think they will fit interchangeably, just that the '69 style wouldn't be correct if originality is what you're after.
I do know the custom replacement bezels that are cut for modern CD/stereos use the same part number for '68 through '71, so they have to fit without problem, and are less expensive than buying a correct bezel (outside the cost of a stereo). That's the route I took for my '69 when I installed an Alpine stereo/CD unit.

If you go with a smooth finish, try Paragon. Their smooth one is approx. $230 where as everyone else is $299. I asked this same question on the NCRS board, as a couple of us in NCRS have late model 68's and felt that it's possible they came with a pebble finish. But the NCRS guide specifically says all 68's came with a smooth finish. Whether this is absolutely true or not, that is how they are judged.
