Mike Yager, founder of Mid America Motorworks, was out of the country when a powerful tornado ripped through Effingham, IL carving a path through his company's headquarters.

For the first couple of days he could only see the damage through the eyes of people who were on the ground, including his son Michael, who now runs the company's daily operations.

But on Sunday June 21st Mike finally walked the Mid America Motorworks campus and MY Garage Museum for the first time since the June 17th tornado, and his post makes it clear just how bad the damage really is. He said he drove the surrounding neighborhoods first, where more than 35 families had their lives turned upside down, and he’s grateful there was no loss of life among employees or the community.

Seeing the property in person hit him hard. He described it as pure devastation, especially for a place he’s been building since 1979. He also gave a lot of credit to his son Michael, who has been carrying the weight of this disaster on his shoulders since day one, and he made it clear how proud he is of him.

Mike also called out the local businesses and people who stepped up immediately to help: Grunloh Building, Niemerg’s, Lion’s Liquors, Joe’s Pizza, and others, saying the community support has been incredible. At the same time, he was honest that some folks he expected to hear from haven’t reached out yet, and he emphasized that in his part of Illinois, you’re supposed to help your neighbor when they’re down.

Despite the destruction, he ended on a strong note, saying, "We are not finished. Mid America Motorworks has been here for over 50 years, and we intend to be here for the next 50."

Below is just one of the pictures he posted. To see more and video, see his facebook post.

From the looks of some of the pictures and videos I’ve seen, it looks real bad.
If there is any way, some of us could help Mr Yager and his business, please post a link.
So glad no one was killed during the tornado.

Mike’s comments are inspiring. While I know he and the team are hurting, Mike is already looking forward. I love his attitude. I hope to visit the new store in the future.
