There have been quite a few e-mails into the Support mailbox recently regarding forgotten passwords.  This is a simple reminder that the security protocol installed on the site does not allow anyone to see a member's password or Challenge Question Answer, and that includes site admins (Adam W and myself).

So if by chance you should forget your password, before you send an e-mail to the Support Gang click on the "I Forgot My Password" link, which is located just below the password box on the main site login page.  There you can request your password to be sent to the e-mail address associated with your member account or you can be prompted with your Challenge Question/Answer and change your password on the spot.

Here's a suggestion on making your Challenge Question/Answer simple to help you remember your password - make the Challenge Question Answer be your password.  Or at the very least make it a question that the answer is something directly related to your password.  In most cases having a totally unrelated question/answer combo does nothing to help you remember your password.

For example - if your password was "green" make your Challenge Question be "What is the color of money?".  Or if your password is a pet's name make your Challenge Question be "What is my pet's name?".

Just make sure that what you pick to use is something only you would be able to answer.

Good post, Jim!

For some reason the "I forgot my password" link always seems to get overlooked.  The fact is, if you forget your password... clicking the "I forgot my password" link will get you back into the site MUCH faster than if you send a support email.  The only reason you should be sending support an email about a lost password is if you also do not remember the answer to your challenge question. Just remember, when you email support, it can take 24-48 hours to get a reply from us, so try your challenge QA first!  And usually, we'll recommend you use the "I forgot my password" link first before resetting your password.

There is no mechanism to "lock" your account if you answer your question wrong too many times, or enter your password incorrectly too many times.  So go ahead and "hack" away to see if you can remember it.  When all else fails, email support.

Also, remember when creating your challenge question, make sure that what you pick to use is something only you would be able to answer.

By answering your challenge question correctly, you will be able to immediately reset your password to whatever you'd like it to be.  (Emailing your password to you is only available to a handful of members that signed up in the early days of the site, before the password encryption was put in place.)

Thanks!

I have a small, pocket-sized notebook with all of my user names and p-werds written in it. Most of my p-werds(for different sites) may be the same, but case sensitive. I ferget, so I has to write them down.
